In Wisconsin’s race for state superintendent of schools, incumbent Jill Underly and education consultant Brittany Kinser will face off in the April 1st general election. The officially nonpartisan race has drawn strong political backing—Underly receiving support from Democrats and teachers’ unions, while Kinser, a pro-voucher candidate, has raised significant funds from conservatives. Locally, Underly won Trempealeau, Vernon, Eau Claire and La Crosse counties. Kinser won Jackson, Monroe, and Clark counties. April’s winner will navigate key education challenges, including funding shortfalls and widening achievement gaps.

Only one other race was held locally and that was for Mayor in the City of La Crosse. Christine Kahlow and Shaundel Washington-Spivey move on, over Ellie McLoone and Vicki Markussen, to face off in April’s election. The winner replaces outgoing mayor Mitch Reynolds.
