Online shopping continues to grow in popularity, but Wisconsin officials are warning consumers to be careful as scams and fraud reports rise. In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission received more than 380,000 complaints nationwide about online shopping issues, including over 5,000 from Wisconsin—making it the state’s number one fraud category.
Scammers often use fake websites that look just like trusted retailers, tricking shoppers through ads, texts, and emails that promise big sales or ask customers to verify account activity. Officials urge consumers to avoid clicking links in messages and instead type in website addresses directly, watch for prices that seem too good to be true, and double-check URLs for spelling errors.
Fake or misleading products are also common online. Consumers are encouraged to research sellers, read reviews, avoid pressure sales, and carefully review product descriptions before buying.
Shoppers can also improve their security by using unique passwords, avoiding purchases on public Wi-Fi, and paying with credit cards for stronger fraud protections.
The federal INFORM Consumers Act now requires online marketplaces to verify high-volume sellers and gives shoppers a way to report suspicious activity, including counterfeit goods or misleading product listings.
For help or to file a complaint, consumers can visit the Wisconsin DATCP Consumer Protection website or contact the state’s Consumer Protection Hotline.
