The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the first case of chronic wasting disease in a wild deer in Marinette County, near Peshtigo.

The infected deer was a three-year-old buck that was humanely dispatched after showing signs of illness.

As a result, Marinette County’s existing deer baiting and feeding ban will be extended for another three years. Any additional positive cases in the county could extend the ban further. Existing bans in neighboring counties will not be affected by this latest detection.

Chronic wasting disease, or C-W-D, is a fatal disease that affects the nervous system of deer and other members of the deer family. The disease can spread when animals gather around shared food sources, which is why the D-N-R restricts baiting and feeding in areas where the disease has been detected.

Hunters and residents can find more information about C-W-D and current baiting and feeding restrictions on the Wisconsin D-N-R website.
