The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has released September 2026 employment and unemployment estimates for metropolitan areas, cities, and counties across the state.

According to preliminary, nonseasonally adjusted data, unemployment rates decreased month over month in all 13 metropolitan areas, all 35 of Wisconsin’s largest cities, and all 72 counties.

However, compared with September of last year, unemployment rates increased in all 13 metropolitan areas. Among the state’s largest cities, rates increased in 29, decreased in Sheboygan, and remained unchanged in five.

At the county level, unemployment rates increased in 61 counties, decreased in four, and remained unchanged in seven.

The figures are estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While unemployment improved across Wisconsin from August to September, the year-over-year figures indicate that unemployment rates were generally higher than they were a year ago.
