The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to celebrate Food Waste Prevention Week, September 28th through October 4th, by finding ways to waste less food and save money.
The DNR says wasted food is the largest component of trash in Wisconsin landfills. In 2020, about 854,000 tons of food waste and scraps were sent to Wisconsin landfills—that’s roughly 294 pounds per person.
The DNR recommends checking date labels carefully, planning meals and shopping with a list, storing food properly, and finding ways to use food before it spoils.
The EPA estimates food waste costs the average American about $728 a year.
The DNR says even small changes at home can help reduce food waste, save money, and keep food out of Wisconsin landfills.
