The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is responding to a manure spill in Monroe County that began over the weekend.

The DNR says it was first alerted to the spill on Saturday, May 17, through its Violation Hotline. The exact volume of manure released has not yet been determined.

The spill has impacted water quality in Spring Valley Creek, Moore Creek, and the Kickapoo River. Fish kills have been observed in Spring Valley and Moore creeks, though the number and species affected are still unknown.

According to the DNR, the spill originated southwest of Norwalk and is believed to have been caused by rainfall washing manure off recently treated cropland.

Cleanup and mitigation efforts are underway, and the DNR continues to monitor the situation.

More information is available on the DNR’s Manure Spills webpage.
