State and federal officials are warning Wisconsin residents affected by the July 27th disaster to watch for scams and identity theft. Fraud often increases after disasters, with criminals targeting people whose homes or property have been damaged.

FEMA, the Small Business Administration, and other government disaster workers will never ask for money or payment for assistance. Residents should always check identification and be cautious of unexpected calls or visits from people claiming to represent FEMA. Inspectors will never ask for banking information.

If you receive a FEMA letter or an inspector visit but never applied for assistance, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 to report possible fraudulent use of your information.

Anyone who suspects a scam should contact local law enforcement. Fraud and identity theft can also be reported to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection at 800-422-7128 or online at DATCP.WI.gov.
