The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or H-P-A-I, in a backyard poultry flock in Racine County.
The affected birds were depopulated and will not enter the food system.
DATCP says the virus is highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry. It can spread through contact with infected birds or wild birds, as well as through droppings, equipment and contaminated clothing.
The agency is urging poultry and other livestock owners to strengthen biosecurity by washing their hands, disinfecting equipment, limiting access to animals and keeping poultry indoors when possible. New birds should also be separated from the existing flock for at least 30 days.
DATCP says poultry owners should register their premises with the state, which helps officials communicate with owners during disease outbreaks.
Owners who notice increased deaths or signs of illness in poultry or other livestock are encouraged to report them to DATCP.
