As Wisconsin communities prepare to celebrate Independence Day and the nation’s 250th anniversary, ReadyWisconsin is reminding everyone to put safety first.
State officials say 226 people were treated in Wisconsin emergency departments for fireworks-related injuries last year, with nearly 60 percent occurring during the first week of July. Even sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 degrees and cause serious burns.
Officials encourage families to attend professional fireworks displays whenever possible. If using consumer fireworks, follow local laws, keep children away, light only one firework at a time, have water nearby, and never relight a dud. They also remind pet owners to keep animals indoors during fireworks displays.
ReadyWisconsin is also encouraging holiday travelers to pack an emergency kit, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, keep grills at least three feet from buildings, and always provide close adult supervision around pools.
Officials say taking a few simple precautions can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday.
