Lorraine J. Freitag “Grammy”, 91, of Black River Falls, died Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at Black River Memorial Hospital with family by her side.
She was born March 8, 1931 on the farm just a few miles from Claire City, South Dakota. Lorraine was one of six children born to LeRoy and Clara (Syverson) Aadland. She went to country school through 8th grade and then attended Sisseton High School in South Dakota where she graduated in 1948.
She started her career in the legal industry working for the attorney, Frank McKenna in Sisseton. On April 1, 1949 she married Rubin Vasend at Assembly of God in Sisseton. Following her divorce, Lorraine moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where she continued her career as a legal secretary with the ability to type 98 WPM. In 1975 she relocated to the Black River Falls area and married Kenneth Freitag on September 6, 1975.
A survivor of Breast Cancer for 36 years, Lorraine was a woman of strong faith. She was a life-long member of Assembly of God in Sisseton, SD and member of Family Worship Assembly in Black River Falls. Lorraine was an avid bowler, participating in both couples’ and women’s leagues. She enjoyed crocheting, refurbishing lamps and furniture, as well as making and refurbishing dolls. Lorraine was known as an outstanding Scrabble player and was an excellent cook and baker. No one ever turned down an invite for dinner!
She is survived by her children, Carolyn (Pete) Lein, Colette (Stuart) Quam, Jerry (Katya) Vasend, Mary (Darren) Vase, and Natalie Shafer; siblings Percy Aadland, and Anita George; step-children, Marilyn (Russ) Battey, Pamela Weyant, and Gregory Freitag; grandchildren, Dominic, Dawson, Tracey, Tressa, Dustin, Jennifer, Lauren, Leanna, Sarah, Stephen and Kristina; step-grandchildren, Heather, Ryan, Amber, Sheyenne and Cody; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tanner, Madeline, Anders, and Caleb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Clara Aadland; her first husband, Rubin Vasend; siblings, Morris Aadland, Myron Aadland, and Darlene Spangler; her second husband Kenneth Freitag; grandson, “Little Teddy” Thode; and great-grandson, Lucas Boespflug.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Family Worship Assembly in Black River Falls with Pastor John Cowles and Isaac Cowles officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Torgerson’s Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Three thoughts that sum up our mother, her faith in Christ was the foundation in her life, family was her most important treasure, and she always exhibited great kindness and respect to all.
