Matthew Samuel Johnston, 80, of Green Bay, WI, died at the Bellin Hospital on June 20, 2026.
Matthew was born on February 4, 1946, and was raised in Black River Falls, WI. He was
married to Carla Johnston, whom he spent many wonderful years with, and with their children,
till they separated. Throughout the years, Matthew worked all sorts of odd jobs- painting and
lawn care were two of the main ones he did. In his spare time, he enjoyed all kinds of puzzles,
but especially crosswords, and he also loved to read. He will be remembered as being a go-
getter, happy, and very proud of his Ho-Chunk heritage.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carla; children, Diana Peterson, Robert Bavinck, and Debra
Hartzheim; his grandson, Jonathon Cornelius; and sister, Marty Angell.
Matthew is survived by his daughter, Georgianna King as well as his grandchildren, Demi
Bigbear and Jeremy Cornelius.
Funeral services for Matthew will be Friday, July 10, at the Buswell Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m.
Friends and family are invited to visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will
immediately follow at the Decorah Cemetery.
The Buswell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
