The Wisconsin DNR is reminding hunters to make safety a priority as duck season opens—September 27 in the Northern Zone and October 4 in the Southern Zone. Officials urge hunters to wear life jackets, balance boats properly, and protect dogs with flotation gear as cold water increases the risk of hypothermia. Hunters are also encouraged to watch weather conditions, avoid overloading boats, and follow the four basic rules of firearm safety: treat every gun as loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, know your target and what’s beyond it, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. More information is available on the DNR’s waterfowl hunting webpage.
