Wisconsin State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly delivered her 2026 State of Education Address at the State Capitol, calling for changes to the way Wisconsin funds public schools.
Underly said decades of underfunding have made it difficult for school districts to keep pace with the cost of educating students. She pointed to the increasing number of school referendums as evidence of what she described as problems with the current funding system.
Underly said more than 90 percent of Wisconsin school districts have gone to referendum at least once during the past nine years.
She also highlighted the role of public schools in preparing students for their communities and for civic participation, and urged state leaders and residents to take action to strengthen school funding.
