Some significant cost-cutting and the return of football and winter sports are factors in a much-improved financial picture for U-W Athletics. A-D Barry Alvarez had warned the effects of the coronavirus pandemic could result in the department suffering a 100-million-dollar operating shortfall this fiscal year. In late January those projected losses were reduced by half, then Wednesday came the announcement that the department’s projected shortfall is down to 35-million. The budget for 2021-and-22 is scheduled to be addressed by the University of Wisconsin athletic board three weeks from today (Friday).
