The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites everyone to enjoy a series of candlelight events this fall, showcasing the beauty of state-managed properties after dark. Kicking off on Saturday, October 12, visitors can explore illuminated walks at Council Grounds and Kohler-Andrae state parks, with more events running through November 2.

“Candlelight hikes offer a unique experience, embracing the best of autumn with fall colors, bonfires, and jack-o’-lanterns,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Parks and Recreation Management director. These hikes are open to all experience levels, with trails illuminated by candles and torches, and may be self-guided or led by park staff.

Many events feature family-friendly activities such as pumpkin carving, campfires, and refreshments like hot chocolate and cider. Some parks will have facilities for grilling or roasting marshmallows.

Volunteers play a crucial role in making these events successful. If you’re interested in volunteering, visit the Volunteer Impact System webpage or contact a Friends Group.

For a complete list of candlelight hikes, check the DNR’s Events Calendar. Most properties require a 2024 Wisconsin state park vehicle admission pass, which can be checked out at participating libraries.
