Health officials in Trempealeau County are reporting the first human case of West Nile Virus in the area this year. The virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes and does not pass from person to person. Residents are being urged to take precautions, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding outdoor activities during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Officials also recommend reducing mosquito breeding areas around homes by emptying standing water from containers, cleaning pools, and ensuring window and door screens are intact. Keeping yards trimmed and removing stagnant water can help protect families from infection.
