Severe weather across Wisconsin this week—including thunderstorms, high winds, tornadoes, flooding, and hail—has left homes and vehicles damaged in many communities.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is warning residents to be cautious when hiring repair help. Officials say so-called “storm chasers”—out-of-town crews going door-to-door—often promise quick, cheap fixes but may deliver poor work or disappear after taking upfront payments.

Homeowners are urged to hire trusted local contractors, get written contracts, and avoid paying in full before work is completed. It’s also recommended to check permit requirements and keep detailed records of all repairs.

For vehicle damage, consumers should rely on reputable auto body shops, document all interactions, and remember that shops cannot perform or charge for unauthorized work.

The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance of Wisconsin also advises residents to contact their insurance company as soon as possible, document all damage with photos, and keep receipts and damaged materials for claims.

Officials remind consumers that contractors cannot waive insurance deductibles or negotiate claims on a customer’s behalf.

For assistance or to file a complaint, residents can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-422-7128.
