A sentence has been handed down for an Independence man involved in a deadly crash last year. 27-year-old Gavin Becker will serve five years of probation and complete 500 hours of community service after a 2023 crash on Highway 53 that killed 64-year-old Jeannie Furlin. Authorities say Becker crossed the center line and hit Furlin’s SUV while looking at his phone. A one-year-old in her vehicle was not hurt. Becker also lost his license for a year and will be required to pay restitution, though the amount is still undetermined.
