Flags in Jackson County will fly at half-staff Saturday in honor of retired firefighter Howard “Howie” Lee Boettcher of the Taylor Fire and Rescue Department. Boettcher died in April at the age of 71. Known to many as “HB,” Howie dedicated years of service to the Taylor Fire Department and was deeply involved in his community. He was active in the Taylor Rod & Gun Club, FFA alumni, and even served as Grand Marshal for the Taylor Old Fashioned Days parade. He worked as a bartender at a number of local bars, at the former P&S Farm Supply in Taylor, Ashley Furniture and then became a truck driver which included haling milk and semi driving for Millis Transfer, Greenleaf Trucking and most recently driving for Black River Falls-based McNulty Farms & Trucking until health issues sidelined him in 2019. Boettcher is remembered for his generous spirit, love of westerns and classic country music, playing cards, watching the Packers…and always willing to help friends, family and neighbors whenever and wherever needed. Services for Howie Boettcher are today at the Taylor Community Center. Memorials may be given to the Taylor Fire & Rescue Department or the Woodlawn Cemetery Association.
