October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and several Wisconsin state agencies are reminding residents and organizations to take steps to protect themselves online.

The Wisconsin Departments of Administration, Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and Military Affairs recommend three basic steps: use long, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication; think before clicking links or attachments in emails and text messages; and keep computers, phones and software updated.

Officials also warn that scammers often use phishing and fake websites to steal passwords, money and personal information.

For organizations, the state recommends the “Three R’s of Cybersecurity” — reduce vulnerabilities, replace outdated devices, and recover quickly from cyber incidents.

Consumers can find additional resources or file complaints through the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
