New data from the 2025-26 school year show Wisconsin students making modest gains in literacy and mathematics, with proficiency increasing in most grades and student groups.
Statewide, 48.4 percent of students in grades 3 through 11 were proficient or above in English language arts, while 48.7 percent were proficient or above in math.
Among public school students, proficiency was nearly 50 percent in both subjects. Students attending schools participating in the Private School Choice Program had lower proficiency rates.
Reading proficiency increased in every tested grade compared with the previous year. The state also saw modest progress in narrowing proficiency gaps between Black and white students, although significant gaps remain.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction says it is developing statewide literacy and mathematics plans aimed at providing additional support for students and educators.
