A Black River Falls man will spend 24 years in prison for a violent attack last year. Fifty-three-year-old Paul Sylvester was sentenced Friday in a Jackson County Courtroom. In May, a jury found him guilty of six felony charges, including second-degree sexual assault, kidnapping, and theft. Prosecutors say in May 2024, Sylvester got into a woman’s car in a Sparta parking lot, assaulted her, and drove her into the Jackson County Forest. There, he assaulted her again and left her stranded. The victim, badly injured and without her phone or glasses, was found the next morning by a passerby. She told investigators she feared he would kill her. Judge Daniel Diehn ordered 14 years of prison time followed by 10 years of extended supervision. The sentence will be served after another prison term Sylvester already received in a related case in Monroe County. The judge cited the seriousness of the crimes and Sylvester’s lack of remorse. While the sentence was less than requested, District Attorney Emily Hynek said she was satisfied with the outcome.
